Don Hamilton Barden (December 20, 1943 – May 19, 2011) was an American casino executive who worked in Las Vegas and Atlantic City. Mr. Barden has served as the Manager of The Majestic Star Casino LLC since its inception, and he has been responsible for important policy-making duties during his tenure there. Since their inception, Barden has also served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Majestic Investor Holdings, LLC, as well as Manager of Barden Colorado Blackhawk, Colorado, Barden Mississippi Tunica, Mississippi, and Barden Nevada Las Vegas, Nevada; as well as Chairman and President of BDI, among other positions. Barden has also served as Chairman of the Barden Gary Foundation, Inc. and the Don H. Barden Foundation, Inc., both of which have been in existence since their inception. In addition, he served as the President and Chief Executive Officer of Barden Companies, Inc., as well as a collection of other businesses that he owned and/or managed, among other positions. For over 30 years, Barden has successfully created, owned, and managed a variety of businesses in a variety of sectors, including real estate development, casino gambling, broadcasting, cable television, and international commerce, among others.
Company of the Year honours were bestowed to Barden by Black Enterprise Magazine in 2003. In 2004, Barden won the Trumpet Award for Entrepreneur of the Year, which he had previously received. It had been years since the Barden gaming facility in Gary had been built next to another gambling operation owned by Donald Trump. When Barden purchased the second plant, it paid a price that reflected the facility’s historical income at a time when many additional facilities were opening in Illinois and Indiana. In November 2009, the Majestic Star and Fitzgerald casinos in Indiana, Mississippi, and Colorado filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. It was decided to pass over ownership of the facilities to creditors in December 2011. It should be noted that both the Nevada casino and Barden’s ownership in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania casino were kept as distinct entities and were not included in the bankruptcy.
